We started Transatomic Power to create abundant energy and a healthy world.

We at Transatomic Power Corporation are commercializing our design for an innovative nuclear reactor that safely delivers vast amounts of affordable clean energy. We started this company because we believe it is possible to power the world while helping it thrive.

Today, almost all nuclear reactors worldwide are one type: the light water reactor. We are challenging the status quo by bringing back and improving upon a different design from the earliest days of the nuclear industry: the molten salt reactor, which was first prototyped at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the 1960s. Inspired by their work, we’ve developed a new type of compact, low-cost molten salt reactor, that can tap into even greater amounts of energy than traditional technologies while using existing fuel supplies.

Quick stats

Our technology is based on a proven prototype of a molten salt reactor designed and operated at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the 1960s.

Our power plant design is reliable, carbon-free, and more affordable than fossil fuels.

Our technology is walk-away safe. If electricity is lost to the reactor, it naturally cools itself instead of overheating.

Who We Are

leslie-and-mark
Transatomic Power was founded in 2011 by Dr. Leslie Dewan and Mark Massie, graduates of the MIT Nuclear Engineering department recognized by TIME 30 Under 30, Technology Review 35 Under 35, and Forbes 30 Under 30. The company is backed by FF Science, an investment vehicle of Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund. The Chairman is Ray Rothrock, an MIT nuclear engineer who was formerly a General Partner at Venrock and Chair of the NVCA. The technical board includes the former CTO of Westinghouse, the former Director of MIT’s Nuclear Engineering Department, a previous President of the American Nuclear Society, and a former NRC Commissioner.
